Nuestro Futuro Program
Our Future (Nuestro Futuro) is a program for students in kindergarten to 12th grade. Every Monday through Thursday during the school year, students are welcome to join La Liga for homework help, tutoring, cultural activities and more. We provide program during the summer months as well. The program will also help students improve their English proficiency.
The Nuestro Futuro Program incorporates into its program cultural enrichment, historic heritage, and environmental education workshops. We utilize the assistance of members of the Hispanic community to provide information about the rich heritage of many Latin American countries. We have activities centered on holidays celebrated in other countries. Other activities are centered on art and music. We collaborate with other youth service agencies in the City of Syracuse to promote healthy peer relationships and improve socialization skills. As part of our cultural enrichment activities, youth are exposed to many community events.
The Nuestro Futuro Program also coordinates workshops according to Health and Family Life and Youth Development. We use a Health Educator and the program coordinator to provide information on various topics including illness prevention education and nutrition. Nuestro Futuro provides our youth with mentoring experiences using local universities and other organizations in the community. We have speakers from various organizations in the community on topics such as substance abuse geared toward a younger audience. The program presents activities around themes of prevention/education of sexual abuse, physical abuse, domestic violence, self-esteem, and conflict resolution. The Program Coordinator makes home visits when deemed necessary. This also allows us to develop relationships with parents and to encourage their involvement with the program.
